The Rohloff Caliber 2 is a precision made chain wear indicator. It allows the measure of chain wear in seconds and indicates if the chain is too worn for steel or aluminum cogs/chainrings. After extended use, a chain will no longer fit correctly in the teeth of the sprockets, due to elongation and wear. If the chain is not then replaced, chainrings and sprockets will be damaged, and eventually, the chain will skip over the sprockets. The Caliber 2 allows you to quickly determine chain wear before your chain gets to this condition.

How to Use the Caliber 2

The Rohloff Caliber 2 is manufactured from hardened stainless steel, and can be used for detecting chain wear on all 1/2" x 3/32" derailleur chains. This is a precision tool and it should be handled carefully to ensure maximum durability and accuracy.
Hook the Rohloff Caliber 2 into the chain as shown in Figure I. With a new chain the measurement finger (2) barely moves between the rollers. The greater the wear, the deeper the finger moves into the chain.

If side A of the Caliber 2 tool sinks in fully, allowing the Rohloff Caliber 2 to lie flat on the chain rollers (Fig. II), the chain wear factor has reached 0.075mm per link. To protect ALUMINUM sprockets from premature wear, chain replacement is recommended at this time. If side S of the Caliber 2 tool sinks in fully, the chain wear factor is 0.1mm per link. The chain should now be replaced to avoid skipping and to prevent wear on STEEL sprockets.
